Matters of current topical interest within the industry are listed below:
Export Tables to August 06: On beef, shipments to the US continue to fall behind last years levels as demand from Japan and particularly Korea remain strong. Korea is now running over 20% above last year for the same 10 month period although the return of the US to the Korean market may impact on this. Shipments to the CIS (Russia) also continue to show promise.Overall beef shipments are running around 3% behind last year for the same 10 month period.
We have expanded the tables on lamb shipments following requests from members and now include China, Japan and Papua New Guinea. Growth in the Middle East, Japan amid China is apparent with a leveling off of shipments to the US.
Mutton shipments are up over 8% overall for the 8 months ended August reflecting slight increases in shipments to most markets except Taiwan.
US Return to Japan: Please use link to read the press release from the US Meat Exporter Federation following the decision in Japan late yesterday to allow US beef exports back to Japan.Under the agreement the Japanese will only allow beef from cattle 20 months or younger from a list of 34 approved processing plants. At the news Conference Japanese officials said they they had found no problems at 20 of the 35 establishments inspected and that an additional 13 had made sufficient improvements to become eligible.. One plant remains provisional and one plant has been removed from the list.
