Paid Parental Leave Scheme

On 1 January 2011 Australia’s first national Paid Parental Leave scheme commenced. For more information on this new government-funded entitlement for working parents, visit the website at www.australia.gov.au/paidparentalleave

The role of employers is being phased in to help employers transition to the new arrangements. From 1 July 2011, employers will be responsible for providing Parental Leave Pay to eligible employees. Please see Employer Kit for more information.

Competency Based Training for Apprentice Butchers
Nationally the apprenticeship training system has changed from a time-based apprenticeship model to a competency-based model of completion – not just for butchery, but for all trades and qualifications throughout Australia.

This change has been designed to enhance and develop more flexible and responsive training systems. Employers will benefit because they will have a more highly skilled workforce in a reduced time-frame.

Competency based completion means that the qualification is gained once all assessment is successfully completed. This may be a shorter, and occasionally longer, time frame than the ‘nominal’ time allocated by some State Training Authorities.

The attached files are actual case studies of competency based training in the meat industry across Australia.
